“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching” (2 Timothy 3:16).
Scripture, entrusted to us by Sacred Tradition and using words that testify to the Word, the Son of God, has a depth and richness which can scarcely be plumbed by mere human effort. With dual authorship—God and man—layers of meaning across ages cascade before the reader’s eye. While a human author alone, only with immense effort, may introduce two or three layers of meaning into his literary work, the Holy Spirit can do so much more. He who wove together created reality now weaves within words a message transcending a particular time and place. He wrote for Christians now, as he wrote for Christians then.
In this way, all Scripture is profitable, for in it are so many riches. It is good for teaching, because it is for all, in all times and places.
To tap into a small stream of this richness, the Dominicana Blog is pleased to present One-Line Wonders, a featured series from the student brothers. Each post, released weekly on Saturdays, will dig deep into a single line of Scripture. Through these exegetical exercises, we hope to convey for your contemplation something of the spiritual sense of the Sacred Page, a hidden world waiting to be explored in the light of Faith. Like a diamond, we hope that every turn of every word will be a source of wonder at the beauty and the love of God. Together, let us contemplate the “depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God” (Rom 11:33).
